UPDATE: Check out the follow-up post for a female version.
I don’t want to ruin it for you but a caller (Chris) to the Point’s (105.7 FM in St. Louis, MO) Woody and Rizzuto Show had been dating his current girlfriend Ashley for nearly 5 years. He had always wanted to come up with a really good idea on how to propose to her. He purchased a ring 3 months back and began his scheme. He asked the local radio station to help him out and aid with tricking Ashley.
As women tend to do though, she was snooping about the house and came upon the ring tipping her off about the proposal. Not to be outdone, Chris caught wind of this via a friend of hers and modified his plan….that is until he also caught wind of her alleged cheating…and then he really modified his plan. If you do nothing else today I beg you to give this a listen…it will be the best 12 minutes of your day.
Wow. That was terrible. Yes, she kissed her friend and made some mistakes, but that was just…awful. As a young woman, all I hear is three men ganging up on a vulnerable girl. Was she right? No. But neither were they. No one can understand the intricacies of their relationship except for them, so for those two radio hosts to provoke her and take joy in her demise was unacceptable. What those men did was just mean, and generally speaking, I'm all for the cheating person getting what they deserve. What they did was hateful, not funny at all. Since when do two wrongs make a right?
I can't believe you posted this, I really can't. I also can't believe that you posted it as a joke. What's more…"snooping around, as women do?" What is THAT supposed to mean?! On top of that, all of the similar comments made during the radio program …if those were comments that generalized African Americans, would you think it was funny? No. Would you post it on your website? No. But it's okay, because it's about women, right? Unbelievable.
I've never actually posted anything like this before, but this was just…I mean, I'm in shock. I used to come to this website a few times a day, but that definitely won't be happening anymore.
that was plain great. thank you, top cultured!
Oh, Regina, shut up. That remark was barely sexist. And, btw, did you forget that that "vulnerable girl" was lying, dishonest, cheating asshole, and her being an asshole kinda trashed this guy's life?
When I heard this interaction between four people who have done wrong, I became sadder and sadder.
(I dislike elaborate and egotistical marriage proposals, the ones where the guy smirkingly proposes as though he's giving his girl A NEW CAR! And she's expected to swoon at the public spectacle of being allowed into the life of god's gift to women. I would like to see one such video in which her reply is something like, "Umm, can't we talk about this in private?" I listened to this hoping it would be something like that.)
As I think about this, I think the one who loses the least is Ashley. She, I hope, is done with Chris, who must have known how badly those radio jerks would mangle this interaction. They invested five years in each other and both said they imagined spending their lives together then he tosses it out based on gossip. (Never mind that it was correct–he didn't know that until after he started this car wreck.)
My guess is that they have gotten back together since this recording. Chris will claim he didn't know the radio jerks were going to hurt her this much and she will say those other guy(s) meant nothing to her; neither of them being honest.
My hope would be that Ashley moves on, realizing Chris is as bad an ass as the radio dorks, and that Chris declares his love of the radio show on every future first date, making them last dates as well.
Wow. If a man cheated on his girlfriend and the woman in question did something along these lines every single girl would support and celebrate her reaction. They would treat it as some sort of militant feminist victory in fact. So don't be playing the sexist card while sporting such a blinkered view on sexual equality. The actions he took were completely just, the argument that he acted over gossip is ridiculous considering you completely contradict yourself by saying they were correct. Any woman defending this girl and slating the radio presenters is acting out of sexism, you prove this by feeling the need to make the distinction that they are men and drive the point again and again. I think this is completely warranted disregarding any sexist debate.
Probably not the best way to solve it, but what a slut, as if you'd go and CHEAT on your boyfriend, whom you KNEW was going to propose to you. You just can't stand up for her at all.
She was making out with a guy she had cheated on her boyfriend of 5 years with AFTER finding the wedding ring. I don't care what you guys think, she deserved every second of her humiliation. And yes he knew what the radio hosts were going to do, guess what he didn't give a crap because shes a cheating whore. Who cares about the "intricacies" of the relationship, she making out with this guy after knowing she was getting married. Just goes to show you can't make a whore into a housewife.
And yes this commenters are sexist believing the women is innocent of all wrong doing. "Its ok cause its about women" , man you are fucking dumb and probably should not be allowed to use the internet or even procreate. "Oh my god did he say procreate, thats something women do" yea get your tubes tied please. He probably found out from someone he trusted that she was making out with that guy and she couldn't even deny it. Who would even want to marry that whore?
Chris is the one that wins because he gets validation of not making the "mistake" of marrying her. He already wasted 5 years, he can learn and love again. Some people can get over their long time lovers cheating, like Enderby who appearantly believes in forgiveness. Have you ever been cheated on?
Maybe the radio commentators went a bit far but apparently they were on friendly terms with him, though they did try to talk him out of it, and what do you say when your friend is cheated on with someone who is "just a friend".
To "walsh":
I think you're right that a lot of people (not just women, but both sexes) would celebrate a woman's actions if the roles were reversed and she chose this method of revenge. But that wouldn't make them right and I doubt I would support it.
I think it's good to be on the watch for reverse sexism, as I think you are doing in your note. I think imagining the situation being reversed is a good way to approach any kind of conflict. Empathy.
Still, as I do that, I can't imagine any variation on this situation in which I would enjoy listening to such crude radio asses tear a relationship apart. (The only good thing they did was thoroughly confirm that he really wanted to do this but even that seemed to be too little, too late. He already had lots of momentum toward the breakup; I can only imagine the mocking they would give him if he had backed out at that point.)
So I would say that, regardless of the party's genders, engaging radio dorks to handle a painful stage in a relationship is a terrible idea.
I don't blame the radio asses here. They are doing exactly what they are hired to do and Chris should have known what he was getting himself into. They are just being themselves but Chris was wrong to use them in his relationship.
Also, Ashley is definitely wrong to have behaved as she did here. Screwing around, finding the ring and telling her friends about it: these are not admirable behaviors. I think it's possible that a reasonable look into whether the relationship should continue would conclude they should break up.
You say, "Any woman defending this girl and slating the radio presenters is acting out of sexism, you prove this…" You assume I am a woman but I am a man. Does that make you as sexist in your assumptions as you accuse me of being?
And, yes, I still think they would have gotten back together, having learned nothing of value.
And I don't believe I contradicted myself. He acted rashly on gossip. The gossip was probably correct this time but he didn't have that confirmation when he started this deal.
Holy crap this is crazy/awesome/amazing/hilarious. Yikes.
I know the man was angry, and his anger was justified, but this public airing of his anger, and the womans humiliation was wrong from the start. In this day and age, does anyone besides me see lawyers and courts in these peoples future? I have no doubt that the man was completely right in ending the relationship, but doing it in such a public manner, with the added rancor of the DJs, all I can say is that this will never turn out right. Having been caught making errors like this, I never relished the payment for such deeds, as no one who has ever been caught ever does. Whatever just desserts one is liable for, having them pounded into your teeth will not allow lessons, nor wounds, to mend. Sooner, or later, though you've been given your due wages for being wrong, if you got trashed as well into it, your own anger will rise to be something even more fearful. There was once a saying, "Revenge is black pudding". It means you get what you want, but it does not satisfy. Don't be suprised if once you really lay into someone, when they find a way to do the same.
The joy they took in her pain was horrible. I'm not trying to justify any of her actions, but the apparent delight they experienced from this beyond sad.
Holy schnikes! I have to be honest and say I stopped listening to this when Chris came on and I heard the excitment in her voice. I knew for sure what followed I did not want to be apart of. This kind of hate filled crap is a crushing statement of what our Realty Show obsessed culture has become.
Remember how stupid the Arnold move "The Running Man" seemed? Impossible for somthing so ridiculous to ever happen. It does not seem so out of touch with reality now. :(
Interesting that some here defend her even though she didn't deny one thing she was accused of. No, no sympathy; she got exactly what every chick here would APPLAUD had it been a woman setting up a man on the show.
Wow, that is lame. I guess the people that think that is so amazingly funny – like Scotty Trigg – are the same idiots that make up the viewership of MTV's The Real World. The girl is obviously a dumbass, and obviously this guy was hurt by her, and payback's a bitch. He's justified in being pissed, and he's justified in telling her to take a walk. But, this just totally lacks class. After this stupidity he's as big an ass as she is. Not something a real man would do.
Beautiful. Doesn't matter if it is a man-whore or a female whore, they should all reap what they sow. Paid in full, bee-otch!!!
I have to agree with Sean and Troy on this one.
Yes, Ashley obviously cheated.
Yes, Chris had every right to be angry and break up with her
Yes, Chris knew that the DJ's would tear into her
Yes, Chris knew that Ashley would be humiliated and crushed
None of that makes Chris' actions right.
Chris should have taken the high road on this one. He should have confronted Ashley in private, and not air everything for the entire world to hear.
I'm not justifying Ashley's behavior, but there are marriages that survive worse actions that this. That's why Chris should have kept it private.
Just because you can do something doesn't mean you should do something.
Fake.
Holy shit, that was awesome. Cheater got shamed.
This was great. It is nice to see a women get what she deserves. She cheated hands down and got what was coming to her.
Oh my — I'm speechless. I don't know what to say other than, wow, just wow.
This was cold, but it was good radio. Most people enjoy a spectacle. These radio shows are an escape from our own lives into something else. Have you ever caught yourself feeling better about yourself and your life after watching an episode of Cops or Jersey Shore? It's entertainment, and that's why people listen to the radio.
As for the couple, well, obviously they are better off without each other. What better way for a clean break than to do something as over-the-top asinine as this? Why take the chance that you'll go soft and want to take her back? Better for a clean break and move on afterward in my opinion.
That. Was. EPIC!!!!!!!! I lold SOOOOO friggen much at that my stomach is sore!!! OMG like boi!! fare hate that, so i wud!!!!!!
I am a married guy, and I agree that what she did was "cheating". I can understand the guy wanting to dump her publicly. So I was okay with the stunt, up to the point where the DJ's started laughing at her. From that point on, it was cruel. Unnecessary roughness.
