It never ceases to amaze me, all the little easter eggs that have been hidden right in front of my eyes. I mean…I grew up both of these and I never ever noticed it. Those game developers can be so sneaky.

You're very wrong on this. According to Miyomoto(you know, his creator), the only reason Mario has overalls is because it was impossible to tell the difference between his torso and limbs without it. So they added that for the animation, not for some tip of the hat.
