They met in the spring of 2000 when the advertising agency which she worked for, Foote, Cone & Belding, redesigned the television commercials for O’Brien’s Houston sponsor, Hilton Furniture. As the team’s senior copywriter she appeared on Late Night (March 3, 2000 episode) as part of an advertising skit. They dated for roughly 18 months prior to Conan proposing.
They were wed in Seattle, Washington on January 12, 2002, meaning they just celebrated their 8th wedding anniversary (bronze or pottery) at St. James Cathedral. Conan’s Harvard roommate, Father Paul B. O’Brien, married the couple.
Her father Jake Powel is the leader and guitarist for the Dixieland band The New Orleans Quintet. They have been playing at the New Orleans Creole Restaurant in Seattle’s Pioneer Square every Monday evening for more than 21 years.
She earned her bachelor’s degree from Vassar College in 1992 and also worked on her Master of Fine Arts at Columbia University. Her May 2003 thesis reading at Columbia University was included with part of the MFA students in fiction, non-fiction and poetry concentrations .
