#FirstWorldSolutions: Are Americans Shopping their Way out of Depression?

It has become a joke and a cliche that when Americans want to make themselves happy, they grab their credit card and head to the nearest mall or online shopping destination. Even the infamous Tammy Faye Bakker once said, “I always say shopping is cheaper than a psychiatrist.”

Are we “treating” our emotional ills with retail therapy?

According to the infographic below, that’s exactly what’s happening to around a quarter of the adult population. Numbers can always lie (or made to say whatever we want them to say if we torture them long enough) but the psychological cures prescribed in Sex and the City are being demonstrated in America every day.

When there’s a #FirstWorldProblem, there’s normally a #FirstWorldSolution waiting to be found.
