Scale, scale on the floor, who’s the fairest of them all?

If you resolved to lose weight and get fit for the New Year, chances are that your resolution has long fallen by the weigh-side. But hey, maybe your muffin-top isn’t the problem. Maybe you were simply born 100 years too late.

Thin was NOT in a mere 119 years ago, according to this advertisement for a weight control product from January, 1891.

End despair! Get plump in four weeks.

End despair! Get plump in four weeks.

My favorite part is the testimonial: “In four weeks Professor William’s famed FAT-TEN-U FOODS increased my weight 39 pounds, gave me new womanly vigor & developed me finely. My two sisters also use FAN-TEN-U and have gained much needed fleshiness. Because of our newly found vigor we have taken up Grecian Dancing and have leading roles in all local productions.”

Moral of the story: If you give it some time (another century?) maybe fat will be back.

Until then,  consider treating yourself to the Yay Scale. It turns your weigh-in to a warm fuzzy and sells for about $50.

Transcendent graffiti

For the most part, I don’t think graffiti is beautiful.  It seems like the kind of thing people create when their inner artist has been kidnapped and terrorized by their inner hoodlum. When it covers a whole wall, the effect reminds me of an overstuffed closet and makes me want to close the door. Like this …

New York graffiti

But then there’s the occasional work that transcends into public work of art. I stumbled across these amazing images in Flickr that made me say, “Wow.”

From a street Duesseldorf/Germany famous for its graffiti.

Awesome Forkless Bike

If you had to guess which bike part you could live without, would the fork even make it on the list? The fork connects the handlebars to the front tire and that’s how, since the invention of the bike, you steer the thing.

But here’s an amazing forkless bike design by Olli Erkkila that comes by way of Toxel.com. It was created as a graduation project for the Institute of Design in Lahti, Finland.

Though I’m not eager to take a bike like this on the mountain biking trails of my home base, Colorado (that’s an instant injury for sure), I love the way it reminds me to rethink how I look at the world. Whatever I think can’t be changed, altered, or redesigned simply needs to be looked at in a new way.

World’s largest man-made earthquake

There are no earthquakes in Colorado. But that didn’t stop a research team from Colorado State University from building the world’s largest earthquake shake table. The project, done in conjunction with building material maker Simpson Strong-Tie, is an attempt to recreate a series of earthquakes similar to the 1994 Northridge, Calif. quake that brought many a building to the ground. The goal is to test new building designs to see how they would stand up to such a quake.

Malaria parasites? There’s an iPhone app for that!

UC Berkeley researchers have developed a microscope built on a cell phone that not only takes color images of icky things like malaria parasites, but also of super-icky things like tuberculosis bacteria. Although I don’t personally want to use my cell phone to discover how many germs I’m living amongst, the technology is a major step in making clinical tools more accessible, and affordable, for health workers in the field.
