Activist Hens

When we think of activists, we normally think of people carrying signs, chanting inspiring words, and rallying around a cause. We don’t normally think of activists laying eggs, but that’s exactly what happened in Frankfurt last year prior to Easter.

The Eggmachine campaign helped to draw attention to animal cruelty, particularly the poor conditions that many hens are forced to live in during their lives as profitable omelet makers. According to the campaign (translated from German):

It’s Tuesday, the 12th April 2011. Just before Easter. All the shops are full of eggs. The display windows of department stores, people vote for the Easter holidays. Amidst the bustle of shopping is a commercially-looking, but extraordinary snack vending machine from which you can buy eggs. Fresh eggs from real chickens. The Egg-Machine!

Check out this video (H/T: Walyou) and remember it when you’re at the grocery store. Free-range FTW!
