yeah Kevin...you're cheap and retarded. if you don't feel that getting you coffee is entitled to a tip then get Folgers, if making you a sandwich is not entitled to a tip make it your damn self, and the funniest of all is you think that going to a restaurant sitting down and making them get you everything and then they still don't deserve a tip is right...here's a tip for you. in NC (where I live) Servers get paid 2.13 an hour. The only way they make min wage is if they didn't make enough tips which also means their probably going to get fired because the restaurant doesn't want to have to make up that additional money. Also by not tipping every time you go to the same place they will remember you and your service will get worse and worse and worse...

Those of you against tipping -are- bastards... I have worked as a waitress in restaurant and as a barista in the past. The cheap customers are usually the ones with the most specifications with their order, impatient, and unfriendly. If you don't want to tip, don't do it, but don't whine about the fact that there is a tip jar sitting on the counter (or because you feel forced too when eating at a restaurant). I would provide excellent service to customers... I would go beyond the simple job description to help keep customers happy. THAT is what a tip jar is for. No, you don't tip someone for -just- doing their job... a tip is for those who do their job well.

As far as cooks in restaurants, they make much more money than the waitress bringing you your food. That job, I would guess in most places, depends on tips. Don't be an a-hole and blame their job description on lack of education either... some people enjoy being a waitress and others are forced to because of circumstances, and maybe that's the only job available. Quit being so shallow, put yourself in their shoes. That person could be working three jobs to support their family, but all you see is someone bringing you food... food that person may be having a hard time buying themselves.

Tip for great customer service... that's what it's for.

I don't wait tables or make coffee but at times I've worked in jobs that tips are excepted. I was a hair stylist for years and now I'm a clown. As a clown I paint faces and twist balloons 2 skill sets I bet that engineer doen't have. It depends where I'm at how good the tips are. Let me tell you too that tipping is not putting a few coins in a container on a counter. Real tipping is 15% or more of the price of the service. Say I paint 2 full faces at $5 each that would be $1.50 tip my cell has a tip caculatur in it. I've tipped the bagboy at the store before and even tip the guy that pumped my gas. Of coarse full service gas stations are not around much anymore but in both cases they were sure surprise and yes it brought a smile.

To all those "get a better education/get a better job" motherfuckers: I am a server with a college degree (summa cum laude, in fact). Yes, it sucks. But I do my job with a smile, and I apply just as much energy to serving as I did to my education and I would to a better job, if I could get one.

But right now, people with the jobs I want can't retire, because they lost their savings. So I'm serving. And if you don't want to tip me, if you make the excuse "why should I tip someone for a job I could do myself" - then go somewhere where you DO do it yourself. Pick up takeout. Go to a buffet. Make your own fucking dinner. If service doesn't matter to you, then don't go somewhere and ask for service.

And I can guarantee, if you let a server give you her full attention, energy, and effort and then don't tip - you will not be getting the same level of service, if any at all, if you dare to set foot in the place again.

also, people who make your food and coffee are paid shit. (granted, a little more than wait staff...but not enought to make it worth it.) so be nice if you feel like being nice. A dollar isn't gonna kill you.

And to those of you who think that the restaurant owners are "ripping off" their staff and guests, did you know that the average restaurant only profits an average of 30% or their yearly sales? And that is only if the restaurant has a liquor and beer license too help bring the profit margin up. If you dont want to tip you will have no one to serve your families on Mothers Day when you all want to go out to eat your family; or on Sunday after you give your cash to the church. If you dont tip, fine. Dont tip. But dont complain either when the price of going to Ruby Tuesdays and paying $8 dollars for a burger and fries goes up. And why do you think the price of going out to eat goes up? So the owners can pay to keep their staff working for you, serving you and your families during the holidays.
